Tampa Confidential: Katie Sommers

ABOUT ME_ I STARTED IN RADIO THROUGH AN INTERNSHIP WHILE FINISHING MY COMMUNICATIONS DEGREE AT UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON. Initially I was involved with the promotions department, but that led to filling in on the classic rock station followed by full-time nights on the alternative rock station and then middays for the Top 40 station… Which eventually led me down to beautiful Tampa, Florida, and the legendary 93.3 FLZ. THERE HAVE BEEN SO MANY EXCITING EXPERIENCES WORKING AT 93.3 FLZ, from interviewing major celebrities like Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and Demi Lovato to working backstage...

The History of West Tampa

With all apologies and due regard to Ybor City, West Tampa should be known as “Cigar City” since it was (unlike Ybor) an independent municipality for 30 years. West Tampa owes its creation to both the cigar industry and to the Macfarlane Investment Company headed by Hugh Macfarlane. Born near Glasgow, Scotland, in 1851, Hugh Campbell Macfarlane moved to Tampa in the mid-1880s and opened a law practice. In 1887, as a city and state’s attorney, he helped reincorporate the city of Tampa and began purchasing several hundred acres of land on the western bank of the Hillsborough River. Then, beginning...

But in addition to the glass doorknobs, original penny tile flooring and clawfoot tubs that you’ll...

Made in Tampa: Florida Cane Distillery

As businesses around the country slowed their production to a halt or even closed their doors in the early months of the pandemic, Florida Cane Distillery could not keep up with demand. But the team wasn’t working overtime to produce bottles of El Encanto rum or Plant City Strawberry vodka at their Ybor City facility. Instead, from late March until September, the distillery pumped out hand sanitizer exclusively. They set up an online ordering system, and the first batch sold out in seven minutes.
